According to Valve, fewer than 100 Steam users have installed these malware-implanted games, and they have notified these users via email.

While the hackers haven't had much success distributing malware using Steam this time, Valve has taken significant steps to prevent such incidents from happening again. CTOnews.com understands that starting October 24, game developers must pass a Two Factor Authentication check before updating the default branch of a released game (i.e., the version Steam will automatically provide to most players who have installed the game in automatic updates).

SMS will be the only way to receive the two-factor authentication code, so developers will have to register a phone number to use when they want to update the major release version of their game.

Steam partners will also need to use SMS verification to add new users to their organization, and Valve says it plans to add two-step security checks for other Steam background operations in the future.
