EU warns YouTube to comply with content censorship obligations and prohibit the dissemination of false information and illegal content

CTOnews.com, October 14 (Xinhua)-- the European Commission has sent a warning letter to Google and its subsidiary YouTube about false information and picture content related to the Hamas-Israel conflict, the latest move by the European Union to examine the way large technology companies deal with the war.

In letters to Sandal Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google, and Neal Mohan, chief executive of YouTube, Thierry Thierry Breton, the European commissioner, reminded him of content review obligations under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA).

CTOnews.com noted that EU DAS includes users and law enforcement agencies that quickly delete illegal content (such as inciting violence or terrorist propaganda); require underage users to stay away from graphical content such as hostage videos; act quickly when authorities mark content that violates European law; and reduce false information.

YouTube said it was reviewing the letter and the team had deleted thousands of harmful videos: "our team is monitoring harmful videos around the clock and is vigilant to act quickly on videos, clips and live broadcasts when needed."

Since the end of August, more than a dozen large online platforms have been required to comply with DSA regulations to better deal with illegal and harmful content. Violations could result in a fine of up to 6% of the company's annual global revenue.
