CTOnews.com, Oct. 17 (Xinhua)-- groups representing General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen and almost all major automakers severely criticized U.S. proposals for significantly higher fuel efficiency requirements, Reuters reported.

The Automotive Innovation Alliance said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) business average fuel economy (CAFE) proposal was unreasonable and required major changes.

The industry group believes that the plan will raise the average car price by $3000 by 2032, and carmakers will face penalties for non-compliance, adding that the figure "goes beyond reasonable limits and will increase costs for US consumers, with absolutely no environmental or fuel savings benefits."

NHTSA said in July that passenger cars would increase by 2% a year from 2027 to 2032, and pickup trucks and SUV would increase by 4% a year, bringing the average fuel efficiency of the entire fleet to 58 miles per gallon (93 km).

The US Automotive Policy Committee, which represents Detroit's big three automakers, urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to halve its truck fuel economy growth to 2 per cent a year, saying the proposal "would have a disproportionate impact on truck fleets".

Note: fuel efficiency is an indicator of the driving distance per unit capacity of fuel (gasoline, light oil, etc.) or how much fuel can be driven within a certain distance. Fuel economy refers to the ability of a car to drive economically with as little fuel consumption as possible under the condition of ensuring power performance.
