One of the examples attached by CTOnews.com is as follows: the MARCH1 gene (short for Membrane Associated Ring-CH-Type Finger 1) is automatically recognized in Excel as March 1, and then HGNC had to change it to MARCHF1.

Microsoft recently made adjustments to Excel, further subdividing the automatic data conversion feature, adding the "convert consecutive letters and numbers to dates" option.

As long as the user does not check this option and enter the above gene name into the Excel cell, the automatic conversion operation will not be performed. In addition, Excel warns you of upcoming conversions, and users can choose to reject them as needed.

Microsoft's blog has some warnings about the new options. For example, if Excel does not convert the input data, it may affect the correctness of the calculation when using the formula in the table. In addition, users cannot disable automatic data conversion when using macros.
