CTOnews.com Tesla resolved another recall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week through a software update, and recent data shows that Tesla's car recalls this year will drop from millions last year to hundreds of thousands, seemingly indicating continued improvement in production quality.

According to NHTSA, Tesla recalled 3.8 million vehicles in 2022. But Tesla has recalled only about 439,000 vehicles so far in 2023, and a recent Barron's report estimated that the automaker would recall about 550,000 vehicles by the end of the year.

CTOnews.com notes that all automakers have recalled more than 16 million vehicles so far in 2023, while the total number for 2022 reaches 19 million. While Tesla's recall rate in 2022 was slightly above average, lower recall rates are expected this year.

Tesla recalled 55,000 Model X vehicles last week because a faulty controller failed to detect or display a message about low brake fluid levels. Tesla introduced an OTA software update to fix the problem, eliminating the need for customers to send vehicles to service centers.

While some of Tesla's past recalls required customers to repair them at service centers, many didn't, and some have criticized the use of the word "recall" in those cases. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also criticized the use of the word on multiple occasions, calling it "completely wrong" in a February tweet.
