CTOnews.com October 25 news, according to South Korean media The Elec reported that Samsung display (Samsung Display) is exploring a new OLED panel production process, the focus is to bypass the fine metal mask (FMM).

It is reported that Samsung participated in the Society of Information Display event held in May this year, which was triggered after demonstrating the new production technology of OLED panels.

CTOnews.com Note: fine metal mask is the core consumable component in the OLED evaporation process. Its main function is to deposit RGB organic matter and form pixels in the OLED production process, accurately and finely deposit organic matter where needed, and improve the resolution and yield of the product.

The higher the resolution and the more pixels, the more fine and delicate holes are needed. There are about 20 million holes in a metal mask, which is more difficult to process.

All OLED panels currently used in smartphones and smartwatches are manufactured with fine metal masks, and the industry's largest supplier is Greater Japan Printing Co., Ltd. (Dai Nippon Printing).

Fine metal masks have many technological challenges and are not suitable for producing OLED panels with sizes greater than 15-17 inches. At present, the yield of 6-inch OLED panels produced by FMM is only about 30%, while the yield of larger panels is bound to be lower.

Therefore, the 17-inch to 30-inch OLED panel size is a new field for display panel manufacturers, and it is also a headache for them to choose which production technology.

For the past five years, people have been talking about the production of OLED panels without FMM, but the eLEAP technology introduced by JDI last year has increased interest.

The Japan Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) has also applied for a patent related to the production of OLED panels without using FMM; the other is from Vicino, called Visionox Intelligent Pixelisation (ViP).

Internal sources say Samsung has shown interest in such technologies, but is still under consideration because of patents. The company is used to taking complete control of the market by obtaining all relevant patents and technologies when entering new markets to prevent competitors from entering.
