CTOnews.com, October 29 (Xinhua)-- NASA asteroid sampling probe Pluto (OSIRIS-REx) launched in 2016, successfully collected rock samples from the asteroid Bennu in 2020, and successfully sent the sample module back to Earth on September 25.

These extraterrestrial rock samples, which are not "polluted" by the earth's environment, are expected to help scientists learn more about the mysteries of the early solar system. In order to ensure the "purity" of the sample, the detector's sample collector is sealed in the re-entry capsule together with the sample.

After landing on Earth, the heat shield and shell are removed in the portable clean room, and then the sample collector is transferred to the glove box to seal in the professional clean room in Houston. Tools are prepared in the glove box, and the researchers plan to wear gloves to disassemble the sample collector and take out the sample.

However, according to NASA official sources, a few parts of the sample collector were damaged and two fasteners could not be disassembled by the tools in the glove box, but tools could not be added to the glove box to ensure tightness.

Fortunately, however, the researchers had planned to get 60 grams of samples, but they actually got more than 70.3 grams of samples from the outside of the sample collector and through the gaps in the polyester film on the top cover, after all, the results of this sampling mission significantly exceeded expectations (NASA estimates about 250g).
