CTOnews.com, October 30, the Linux Mint team mentioned in their latest monthly report that they have begun to develop support for Wayland.

The team said that adding Wayland protocol support was one of the main challenges they had to face for a long time, and although they did not expect Wayland to replace X.Org as the default value any time soon, they still wanted to be prepared for the protocol.

According to the plan, Cinnamon 6.0 in this year's Linux Mint 21.3 will provide experimental Wayland support, and users can choose between "default Cinnamon session (running on Xorg)" or "Cinnamon on Wayland" in the login interface.

CTOnews.com also found that it is a trend for the industry to abandon X.Org. Before that, GNOME Desktop, openKylin and others all announced that they would support wayland protocol. In May this year, Hector Martin, the chief developer of Asahi Linux, encouraged users of Asahi Linux distributions to stop using X.Org, believing that:

X.Org is almost unmaintained and completely unsuitable for modern display hardware, and large Linux distributions and major desktop environments have abandoned X.Org support.
