CTOnews.com, November 13 (Xinhua) A recent study conducted in the United States shows that pure electric vehicles (BEV) drive fewer miles per year than gasoline-powered vehicles (including hybrids and plug-in hybrids).
The peer-reviewed study, conducted by researchers at George Washington University (GW), used odometer readings for 12.5 million used cars and 11.4 million used SUV sold between 2016 and 2022. The study found that while most internal combustion, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles have similar mileage, pure electric vehicles drive an average of 4477 miles less per year (CTOnews.com Note: about 7205 km).
The researchers speculate that the difference may be due to the common practice of pure electric car owners to use it as a secondary vehicle in conjunction with traditional or hybrid vehicles. In addition, they suggest that factors such as battery life anxiety and a relatively underdeveloped charging infrastructure may also contribute to this phenomenon compared with the u.s. network of gas stations.
The average internal combustion engine vehicle drives 11642 miles (18735 km) per year, compared with an average of 7165 miles (11530 km) per pure electric vehicle, said John Helveston, an assistant professor of engineering management and systems engineering at GW, a co-author of the study. The gap is small in the SUV segment, with an average internal combustion engine driving 12945 miles (20832 km) per year, while pure electric vehicles drive 10587 miles (17038 km) a year. Interestingly, the average Tesla drives 8786 miles (14139 kilometers) per year, while all other non-Tesla pure electric vehicles drive 6235 miles (10034 kilometers) a year.
Helveston also said that research like this should be used by policy makers and regulators to develop and implement emissions regulations. For example, the latest analysis by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assumes that electric vehicles have the same mileage as cars with internal combustion engines, but this is not the case.
