CTOnews.com, Nov. 15, according to a report on Apple's iPhone maintenance business disclosed by the New York Times, Apple's AppleCare service generates $9 billion a year.

The report points out that repairing iPhone has been a minefield since 2017. Replacing a new battery may trigger a warning message, changing the screen may disable the phone's brightness setting, and a replacement selfie camera may malfunction.

It is reported that Apple has strengthened its control over iPhone parts because of "part matching" since 2016. Unlike cars, cars can be repaired by car stores and do-it-yourself mechanics using general-purpose parts, while the new iPhone code identifies the serial number of the original component and may fail if the part is replaced.

Through this "part matching" approach, Apple encourages users to go to Apple stores or authorized repair centers for repairs, which in turn motivates users to buy the AppleCare service, which allows the company to generate $9 billion a year from the service (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 65.61 billion yuan).

The report reveals some very noteworthy details. According to the New York Times, seven iPhone parts could cause problems during maintenance by 2023, up from three in 2017. It is worth noting that in iPhone 15, when swapped with the same working parts of the same new iPhone, several parts did not work as expected.

Apple charges "higher prices for parts and labor," according to the New York Times, citing a typical Apple screen repair fee of about $300, "about $100 more than work done in independent stores using third-party screens."

China's consumer protection law includes "three guarantees" provisions, which give consumers warranty service for quality problems of major components for two years from the date of purchase of Mac, iPad and HomePod; one year from the date of purchase of iPhone, Apple monitors and Apple Watch; and three months from the date of purchase of wired headphones. In Zhejiang Province, the Consumer Rights Protection Law gives consumers a warranty for desktop computer quality problems for three years from the date of purchase.
