Cruise, GM's driverless car division, apologized for the traffic accident, allowing employees to sell shares

CTOnews.com, Nov. 20 (Reuters)-General Motors' driverless car division Cruise CEO has apologized for the company's suspension and safety review of its self-driving car business after an accident.

In an email to employees, CEO Kyle Vogt also said the company would make a new offer to allow employees to sell shares (Cruise cancelled its previous offer two days ago).

"I am sorry that we deviated from the direction under my leadership, which had a profound impact on Cruise," Vogt wrote in an email.

"as chief executive, I am responsible for the situation that Cruise is in. There is no excuse or whitewash of what happened. We need to redouble our efforts in terms of security, transparency and community participation."

Vogt also pointed out that the way the company works with regulators, the media and the public "must be improved."

In August this year, ten Cruise Robotaxi cars suddenly stalled on the road, causing a traffic jam. A few days later, a Robotaxi rushed into the road construction area and got stuck in wet concrete, while a Robotaxi crashed into a fire engine at the intersection, causing passengers to be taken to hospital.

California's auto regulator announced on October 25th that Cruise's self-driving cars pose an "unreasonable risk" to public safety and "fail to meet the standards for road operation".

Cruise has suspended all driverless car operations in the public domain and will launch a recall of 950 vehicles.

Cruise is facing a number of federal investigations into the safety of its cars, including two cases in which driverless cars disobeyed pedestrians on the sidewalk.
