CTOnews.com November 20, Wine is a compatibility layer built for operating systems such as Linux, macOS, and BSD that allows users to run thousands of Windows applications on Linux, macOS, and BSD systems. Wayland is an alternative window system for the Linux distribution, replacing the aging X11 standard, and Wine is also developing new features for the Wayland driver.

According to the latest code merge submission from Wine, the first part of Vulkan support is now over, with initial Vulkan Surface (VkSurfaceKHR) integration and other basic support code.

In addition, there are two parts of the code for Vulkan support that have yet to be submitted for review and consolidation, namely, exchange chain integration and all other specific parts related to window system integration / Wayland support.

The submission shows that after all three Vulkan parts are supported, Wine users / gamers can begin to experience Vulkan's support for Windows games on Wayland without resorting to XWayland.

CTOnews.com notes that developers choose to support Vulkan first, rather than OpenGL, because the integration is easier and allows the required core driver changes to be implemented with less interference (which will also be used for OpenGL later).
