CTOnews.com, Nov. 21 (Xinhua)-- Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company backed by FTX, has rejected a merger offer from OpenAI's board of directors, according to a person familiar with the matter, according to The Information.

The offer came after OpenAI fired Sam Altman, its chief executive, on Friday, and offered a tempting condition for Amodei to succeed Altman as OpenAI's chief executive. But Amodei also rejected the offer because of his position at Anthropic. Later, Reuters also quoted two people familiar with the matter as reporting the existence of these offers and the fact that they were rejected.

FTX bought a stake in Anthropic before it filed for bankruptcy in November last year, which, according to an internal document, is worth about $500m (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 3.585 billion yuan) and has not yet been sold by FTX's bankruptcy trustee. Anthropic's recent fund-raising activities have raised the expectations of FTX's creditors that they may receive more compensation if the shares are sold. The US Department of Justice claims that FTX's $500m investment in Anthropic in 2022 came from client money.

OpenAI and Anthropic have yet to respond. OpenAI's board fired Altman last week because they no longer believed he could continue to lead the company. Microsoft soon announced the recruitment of Altman to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence research team at the company.

Yesterday, OpenAI's board of directors appointed CEO Emmett Shear, the former video game streaming platform Twitch, as interim CEO. As of Monday local time, almost all of OpenAI's more than 700 employees had threatened to resign, including an executive on OpenAI's four-member board.

Anthropic has received investment from Google and Amazon, and its Claude AI model has become a strong competitor to the OpenAI GPT family of products.
