On the afternoon of November 22, Beijing time, OpenAI announced today that the sacked Sam Altman would return to the role of CEO, ending a board farce that shocked Silicon Valley. The drama also exposed deep divisions within the OpenAI over who should control its own future.

At the same time, OpenAI also reshuffled its board of directors. Bret Taylor, former chairman of Twitter, will be the new chairman of OpenAI's board, while Larry Summers, former finance minister, and Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, a question-and-answer platform, will be new directors. It is worth mentioning that Angelo was a former director of OpenAI, one of the directors who voted for the removal of Altman.

In addition to Angelo, the other three directors who ousted Altman were Ilya Sutskever, chief scientist of OpenAI, Tasha McCauley, a technology entrepreneur, and Helen Toner of the Georgetown Center for Security and emerging Technologies (GCSET).

Altman will not join OpenAI's new board, but it has agreed to conduct a full and independent investigation into recent events at the company, including the role of Altman, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The return of Altman put an end to nearly a week of chaos at OpenAI, which shocked most people in the technology industry, including OpenAI's own investors and employees. Altman's return will be a sigh of relief to investors, customers and employees who fear the board farce could lead to an internal collapse.
