CTOnews.com December 15 news, comprehensive New Scientist, TechXplore and other foreign media reported Wednesday local time, Switzerland Federal Institute of Technology Dr. Giulia Dominijanni and her colleagues jointly invented a new type of robotic arm, this human "third arm" may become an important tool for surgeons or industrial workers.

According to reports, this robotic arm consists of an arm in a real environment and an arm in a VR environment, and all its movements are controlled by a combination of eye movements and diaphragm contraction. The invention was also tested on 65 volunteers who could successfully complete a range of tasks without affecting normal breathing, speech or vision.

The researchers built a virtual environment to test users 'ability to control "virtual arms" using diaphragm movements. The results suggest that diaphragm control does not interfere with the control of physiological arm, speech, or gaze movements.

In this VR device, users are equipped with a belt that measures diaphragm movement. Users wearing VR headsets can see three arms: the right arm and hand, the left arm and hand, and a third arm between the two arms, with a symmetrical six-fingered hand-including two thumbs.

Giulia Dominijanni explained that the symmetrical design of the "hand" prevents people from leaning towards the left or right hand, and also better distinguishes the robotic arm from their own arm.

The researchers say users can also use ear muscles to control robotic arms, which in the future will also help develop rehabilitation programs for people with motor disabilities.

Research on the invention has been published in the journal Scientific Robotics, CTOnews.com, with a link:
