Recently, China Mobile Design Institute and Henan Mobile combined with Shanghai Nokia Bell to realize the industry's first cold plate liquid cooling base station outfield trial commercial use in Nanyang, Henan Province. Compared with other liquid cooling technologies that outsource the liquid cooling shell, the cold plate liquid cooling base station is known as "true liquid cooling", which has higher heat conduction efficiency and stronger power saving capacity.

According to reports, the current wireless communication base station equipment usually uses air cooling, and the computer room needs to use air conditioning to cool the heat generated by the base station.

The air-cooled mode has the advantages of slow heat conduction and high energy consumption, and the energy consumption of air conditioning accounts for 15% to 50% of the total energy consumption of the computer room.

The air-cooled mode needs to reserve enough air ducts, the utilization efficiency of the computer room and cabinet is low, and it is easy to cause the temperature imbalance in the computer room.

Air-cooled equipment requires the use of fans, which will produce disturbing noise, especially when the telecommunications room is located near residential buildings, which is easy to cause complaints.

Air cooling will directly discharge the heat generated by the base station equipment into the outside air, which can not be reused, resulting in a waste of energy.

The basic idea of liquid cooling base station cooling is to replace the air cooling fan with liquid cooling. It means removing cooling fins and fans and replacing them with closed-loop liquid circulation.

Heat takes away more: the heat of the same volume of liquid is nearly 4000 times that of the same volume of air.

The mute effect is better: at the same heat dissipation level, the liquid-cooled noise level is 20 decibels lower than that of air-cooled noise.

Lower power consumption: the refrigeration system saves electricity by 30% 50%, the heat discharged can be reused, and carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by ~ 80%.

CTOnews.com inquiry found that Nokia deployed the world's first 5G liquid-cooled base station in Finland's Elisa headquarters as early as 2020, while reusing the heat generated by the base station to produce hot water and heating.

In 2023, Shanghai Nokia Bell, China Mobile Design Institute and Henan Mobile Branch conducted a pilot field application test on the cold plate liquid-cooled base station in the CRAN computer room in Nanyang City, Henan Province. Under 2 BBU configuration, the power consumption of air conditioning in the computer room was reduced by 25.4% and the PUE value was reduced by 0.13, and the noise in the computer room was reduced by 9 decibels.

Under the configuration of 5 BBU, the power consumption of air conditioning in the computer room is reduced by 53.2%. The score PUE is reduced by 0.32, and the noise in the computer room is reduced by 10 decibels.
