The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Tesla had pushed an OTA update to resolve the problem.

The recall affects 2021-23 Model S and Model X because these vehicles do not meet certain federal safety standards for side collision protection.

The extensive recall covers almost all vehicles sold by Tesla in the United States, including vehicles manufactured between October 5, 2012 and December 7 this year, including the 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2023 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y, all models that support Autosteer automatic auxiliary steering (one of the FSD functions).

NHTSA conducted a two-year investigation into a series of accidents that occurred after Tesla turned on the driving assistance system and found some fatal problems.

Tesla has sent OTA upgrade notifications to affected vehicles, and the software update includes "additional controls and alerts" designed to "further encourage drivers to assume their driving responsibilities".
