Facebook recently tested "end-to-end" encryption as the default setting for Messenger chats, and plans to encrypt all chats and calls on the platform in 2023. In response, Priti Patel, the home secretary, said in a column this week that it would be an "absurd betrayal" if the company did not take children's privacy security into account when launching "end-to-end" encryption.

It is understood that "end-to-end" encryption is a secure communication method that ensures that only users who participate in chat can see the contents of their messages. For years, Meta has been trying to add this feature to Messenger. Earlier, Facebook launched a test announcement on "end-to-end" encryption function after netizens strongly opposed it because it provided the police with Facebook messages and related activities.

Patel wrote in the article that criminals currently use social platforms such as Facebook to spread pictures of naked or abused children, and law enforcement agencies need to obtain relevant information to identify the children in the image and protect them from harm.
