Open Media Alliance releases AV1 3.5, which improves video coding efficiency by up to 34%.

CTOnews.com, September 25 (Xinhua)-- Google engineers on Wednesday released AOM-AV1 3.5, the AV1 format of the Open Media Alliance (AOM). The new version brings a number of performance improvements and memory optimizations that greatly reduce coding time when streaming, rendering or recording from CPU.

First, AOM-AV1 3.5 supports frame parallel coding for a large number of threads. This is the "--fp-mt" option added in previous versions, but a special build-time option was required at that time. The FP-MT option is now available by default, and multithreaded frame parallel coding is expected to greatly improve the performance of AV1 encoders.

Depending on the resolution, the coding efficiency of AOM-AV1 3.5 increases by 20% to 30%. For example, at 1080p resolution, the encoding time with 16 processing threads is reduced by 18% to 34%. At 4K resolution, the rendering time of 32 threads is reduced by 18% to 20%.

CTOnews.com learned that in 2018, the Open Media Alliance (AOMedia) released a new generation of video coding AV1 (AOMedia Video Codec 1.0). The coding, developed jointly by the Open Media Alliance, encodes 4K UHD video with an average compression ratio of 30 per cent higher than that of similar encoders.

At present, Intel Ruixuan alone show, Nvidia RTX 40 series unique show have supported AV1 hardware codec.
