The 91-year-old actor will switch to AI dubbing for Star Wars Darth Vader

CTOnews.com, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) James Earl Jones, 91, who has been Darth Vader's iconic voice since the launch of Star Wars, seems to be planning to finish the job.

According to Vanity Fair, Jones signed the rights to his archival dubbing works, allowing Ukrainian start-up Respeecher to use artificial intelligence technology to restore his voice for the first time in Disney Plus's Obi-Wan.

Respeecher uses sound clips to "clone" the actor's voice to record new lines in the absence of the actor. Matthew Wood, Skywalker Sound's voice monitoring editor, told Vanity Fair that he proposed the option to Jones when he mentioned that he was "considering ending" Darth Vader's role.

In addition, early sound clips of Jones are used in Obi-Wan, so Darth Vader's voice sounds different from that in recent Star Wars works.

CTOnews.com learned that Respeecher had already dubbed the younger version of Luke Skywalker in Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett. In the press release, Respeecher explained that it used clips from Mark Jamil's "many early radio broadcasts, interviews, ADR and dubbing" to digitally recreate Skywalker's voice.
