For the first time in history, Greece has used 100% renewable energy to meet the country's electricity demand for five hours.

CTOnews.com, October 13 (Xinhua)-- Greece fully uses renewable energy to meet the country's electricity demand for the first time on October 7, according to the Greek Independent Power Transmission operator (IPTO).

IPTO said renewable energy accounted for 100 per cent of Greece's electricity generation for at least five hours, reaching a record 3106 megawatt-hours at 0800 GMT. This means that for the first time in the history of the Greek power system, renewable energy has met 100% of the electricity demand.

CTOnews.com learned that Reuters reported that Greece plans to attract about 30 billion euros of European capital and private investment to upgrade its power grid and more than double its green energy capacity by 2030, accounting for at least 70 per cent of its energy mix. The country plans to increase its renewable energy capacity from about 10 gigawatts at present to 2500 gigawatts of renewable energy, and analysts say Athens may reach that goal more quickly.
