Cook confirmed: Apple will start purchasing chips from Arizona in 2024
CTOnews.com, Nov. 16 (Xinhua)-- Apple plans to start buying some of its chips from a factory in Arizona, Bloomberg reported. Apple CEO Tim Cook disclosed this information during a meeting with German engineering staff during a previous visit to Europe.
"We have decided to buy chips from a factory in Arizona, which will start production in 24 years, so there are about two years, maybe a little less," Cook told employees. "in Europe, I believe that as these plans become more obvious, we will also source from Europe," he said at the meeting. " The meeting was attended by Eddy Cue, Apple's head of services, and Deirdre O'Brien, head of retail and human resources.
CTOnews.com learned that Cook did not provide details of the chips Apple would purchase from Arizona, but Apple supplier TSMC is currently building a manufacturing plant near Phoenix. TSMC started the project in 2020 and will begin mass production of 4nm chips in 2024.
Just last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that TSMC plans to open a second plant in Arizona, a $12 billion plant that will produce cutting-edge next-generation 3-nanometer chips that could be used in future Apple devices.
