CTOnews.com, Nov. 24: after more than half a year of development, Redox OS, an open source operating system written from scratch by Rust, has released the latest version 0.8. Redox OS 0.8 is a major release update that adds support for 32-bit x86, audio, and multi-monitor (preliminary), and optimizes many components.

CTOnews.com learned that the main highlights of Redox OS 0.8 include:

Added support for i686Compact 32-bit x86, which is expected to "work" on actual hardware. This also includes support for AC'97 audio and IDE drivers that are common in hardware in the i686 era.

Improved support for 64-bit Arm (AArch64) to start on QEMU, but not yet working on actual AArch64 hardware.

Multiple monitors are initially supported, and the new firmware will provide appropriate frame cache information (still using the VESA driver).

The support for audio is basically completed, and Intel HD audio driver is now enabled by default.

The NVMe storage driver can be better supported in the real machine environment.

The Redox operating system image now works on BIOS and UEFI systems.

The construction system is reconstructed to improve multi-architecture support for the same source code tree.
