It is expected to improve the frame rate of Steam Deck games, and Valve will deploy new extensions for Mesa Vulkan drivers.
CTOnews.com, Nov. 25, Mesa 23. 0 this week initially integrated Vulkan's VK_KHR_present_wait extension. Hans Christian Arnzen (Hans-Kristian Arntzen) and VKD3D-Proton of the Valve Linux team believe that due to current specification restrictions, they can only be added through the DriConf option, and that the new extension can be handled on each game / application, so they both think this is a very "practical" extension.
VK_KHR_present_wait joined Vulkan 1.2.185 only last year, but it dates back to 2019. CTOnews.com learned that VK_KHR_present_wait was designed by Keith Packard, an extension that allows applications to use KHR_swapchain while waiting for the current operation to complete.
VK_KHR_present_wait can monitor and control the rhythm of the application by the number of images that have not yet been rendered. This will greatly improve the frame rate of the game, and Valve may deploy this extension on Steam Deck in the future.
The problem with the VK_KHR_present_wait specification now is the lack of a surface query to check each surface for support for it. This extension is hidden behind the DriConf option until there is the ability to query supported present-wait on a per surface type basis.
