CTOnews.com, December 2 (Xinhua)-- Apple officially launched the satellite emergency SOS function in the iOS 16.1 update, which allows iPhone 14 users to contact emergency rescue through the satellite network without a cellular network signal or Wi-Fi network connection. And a man in Alaska in the United States succeeded in getting out of trouble with this function.

Alaska police received a signal for help in the early hours of December 1, local time, and a man riding a snow plane from Norvik to Kotzeb was trapped. The man was in a cold and remote area without any signal or Internet connection, so he activated the satellite emergency call function on iPhone 14, hoping to get help.

Apple's emergency response center works with local search and rescue teams and Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue Coordinator to send GPS coordinates directly to volunteer searchers. In the end, the man managed to extricate himself from difficulties and was not hurt in good health.

CTOnews.com learned that the address he sent for help was on the edge of the satellite link. Apple said satellite connections may not work at latitudes above 62 degrees, such as northern Canada and Alaska, while Norvik and Cotzeb, where the accident occurred, are close to latitudes 69 degrees.
