SA: as the demand for car cameras increases, so does the performance requirement

CTOnews.com, December 15 (Xinhua)-- Strategy Analytics's latest self-driving car service (AVS) reports "car cameras: more demand, more performance," analyzing the latest trends in car camera technology and market deployment.

Image Source Pexels in the 2022 BMW 3-Series sedan, the new Mobileye EyeQ5 Mid chip is equipped with a single current windshield camera with an 8-megapixel image sensor and a 120-degree wide field of view. This marks the end of the Mobileye trifocal camera module, which has three separate cameras with low resolution and different fields of view.

"recent NCAP requirements ensure earlier detection of vulnerable road users and more accurate and reliable classification of objects in the field of view," said Strategy Analytics analysts. The move behind the front windshield camera integration will allow OEM customers to reduce hardware costs. However, in order to improve the resolution of this kind of camera, smaller pixel size is needed. This reduces the amount of light that the image sensor can receive, making the low-light operation more challenging. As a result, resolution is where car cameras lag behind consumer electronics and mobile applications. "

CTOnews.com learned that higher resolution also means stricter mechanical tolerances in the design of car cameras. Technologies have been developed to ensure that camera performance is not improved at the expense of operating in a more challenging environment encountered in cars, while being able to handle higher levels of data and enhance object perception by adding artificial intelligence.
