Meta stops building two "traditional" data centers in Denmark
CTOnews.com, December 15 (Reuters)-A spokesman for Meta Platforms Inc said on Thursday that the company has stopped construction of two data centers in Odense, Denmark, and will focus on building a new data center for artificial intelligence (AI).
Facebook's parent company, Meta, already has two large data centers in Odense, but only one of the other three currently being developed there will be completed.
"over the past month, we have announced a series of measures to make us a leaner organization, an important part of which is to shift more resources to high-priority growth areas, including strategic investment in artificial intelligence," said Peter M ü nster, a spokesman for Meta.
Last month, Meta said it would cut 11000 jobs for the first time in its 18-year history after several quarters of disappointing results.
CTOnews.com learned that Meta's traditional data centers provide servers for applications such as Facebook and Instagram. But the spokesman said the computing needed for artificial intelligence requires a new generation of data centers.
Construction of two shuttered data centers in Odense began in August this year. On Tuesday, however, Meta terminated its deal with contractor Per Aarsleff, worth 2.4 billion Danish kroner (2.396 billion yuan, $344 million).
