Intel confirmed in a media driver file that MTL (Meteor Lake) will officially support AV1 8bit and 10bit video codecs, the same as DG2 (Sharp) series. AV1 is a new royalty-free video format that is 50% more efficient than H.264.

Meteor Lake's support for low-power AV1 encoding was mentioned in a breaking slide released by Igor's LAB a few months ago, and Intel's official documentation proves it.

At present, Intel Sharp Series, NVIDIA RTX 40 Series and AMD RX 7000 Series have already supported AV1 codec. With the release of a new generation of mobile GPUs, AV1 codec hardware support will also cover notebook terminals.

CTOnews.com learned that Intel, as a founding member of the Open Media Alliance, has done a lot of work promoting AV1 codecs, taking the lead in offering hardware AV1 decoding through its Xe-LP GPUs in 2020. For the first time, Sharp Display supports complete AV1 hardware acceleration, which is 50 times faster than software acceleration. Adobe Premiere Pro, Da Vinci and other software have supported AV1 hardware acceleration such as Intel.
