Bloomberg Mark Goolman revealed that Apple's AR glasses project has encountered "technical challenges" and has been postponed indefinitely and shelved its follow-up development.
"Apple's original vision was to provide a lightweight pair of AR glasses that users can wear all day, but now it will be years before it is commercialized," Mr Gurman said.
According to Apple's previous roadmap, Apple will launch AR (augmented reality) / VR (virtual reality) headsets this year, and then accumulate the relevant technology and software ecology to create an AR glasses in 2024 in 2025.
Gurman said that the current AR technology is not mature enough, and it is not just Apple and other companies that have such challenges. Superimposing virtual information in the real world and augmented reality experience need to be transformed in many aspects. Google's Google Glass is not a successful case.
On the technical level, the weight, volume and design aesthetics of AR glasses can hardly meet the expectations of users of traditional orthodontic glasses. Processors, systems, and software ecologies have not been developed, and even if they provide a good AR experience, size limitations do not provide sufficient battery life, and may actually last less than two hours.
CTOnews.com understands that Apple has stopped its glasses project in the face of these hurdles and now plans to launch a lower-cost but conceptually similar hybrid reality device after the first head-display device. Gurman predicts that this will come in 2024 or early 2025.
Gurman predicts that Apple's first AR / VR headset will sell for about $3000 (currently about 20340 yuan), while the "people-friendly" model will sell for about $1500 (currently about 10170 yuan). The configuration of this popular device will be reduced from Mac level to iPhone level.
