Microsoft has now begun to introduce new vertical tabs for OneNote for Windows clients.

Microsoft has previously adopted the left navigation layout design on OneNote web, Mac and iPad clients, and now Microsoft has brought the same functionality to OneNote for Windows clients.

CTOnews.com learned that users can access vertical layouts by navigating to View > Tab layout > Vertical tabs. If the user doesn't like the new layout, you can switch to the old horizontal tab, and all of the tabs will appear at the top of the canvas. Users can do this by going to View tab layout > horizontal tab.

Microsoft is currently introducing vertical tabs for OneNote for Windows clients, but is currently limited to running internal test projects with version 2302 (build 16124.20000) or later. Microsoft also pointed out that the new layout is not available on OneNote for Windows 10 (UWP). Microsoft has confirmed that it will maintain support for OneNote for Windows 10 (UWP) by 2025. The app that replaced it was the new OneNote for Windows client, which was previously on the Microsoft Store.
