CTOnews.com, February 2 (Xinhua) US semiconductor manufacturer Wolfspeed announced on February 1 local time that it plans to build a 200mm wafer fabrication plant in Sal, Germany, which will be the company's first plant in Europe and will become the company's most advanced plant to cope with the growing demand for automobiles, industry, energy and so on.

Wolfspeed said the plant will become the world's largest 200mm semiconductor factory, using innovative manufacturing processes to produce the next generation of silicon carbide devices.

The Wolfspeed plant is planned as part of cooperation under the Microelectronics and Communications Technology framework of the "Major European Common interest Project" and its implementation will be subject to approval of the European Commission's country aid rules. Funds from the "European Common interest Major Project" will be used to support the technology development and early deployment of the project.

CTOnews.com learned that ZF will also enter into a strategic partnership with Wolfspeed to provide investment to support the construction of the new plant.

According to Wolfspeed, the European plant will be an important part of the company's $6.5 billion (currently about 43.81 billion yuan) capacity expansion plan, along with the 200mm Mohawk Valley device plant and John Palmour silicon carbide manufacturing center.
