As Apple decides to create a new "chief executive" position, the responsibilities of its retail director will also change. Apple announced that retail director Deirdre O'Brien has been relieved of his human resources responsibilities and appointed Carol Surface as chief executive officer. Cook said Surface would report to him and start working at Apple in March.

According to reports, the Carol Surface was executive vice president of human resources at Medtronic, a medical equipment company with about 100000 employees, for 10 years. Her arrival marks the birth of Apple's first chief human resources officer.

Prior to Medtronic, she served as executive vice president of human resources at Best Buy for three and a half years and worked in human resources and personnel at Pepsi for more than a decade. CTOnews.com found that she holds bachelor's and doctoral degrees in psychology from Castleton University, as well as a major in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Central Michigan.

Deirdre O'Brien has worked for Apple for 30 years and has been senior vice president of retail + personnel since 2019. With the arrival of Carol Surface, she will focus on retail responsibilities from March.
