Instacart's sales figures are another good indicator that the company has a second curve for advertising, not just grocery delivery. The company said transaction volume grew by less than half of overall sales, up 16 percent from a year earlier. The company's sales growth was particularly strong in the fourth quarter, reaching 50%. Its total profit rose 80% in the quarter.

Instacart also announced a delivery service for small business customers, hoping to enrich its business beyond traditional grocery delivery.

Called Instacart Business, the new service will offer merchandise from retailers such as Staples, Costco and Restaurant Depot, with door-to-door delivery. That would put Instacart in more direct competition with Amazon and Walmart, both of which have customized versions of their websites for corporate customers.

Instacart's launch comes as the company seeks to go public this year. Instacart has cut its valuation internally several times since its latest round of funding in March 2021, valuing it at $39 billion, and reported in December that its valuation had fallen to $10 billion.
