Tesla plans to double the annual production capacity of the Berlin factory to 1 million vehicles without increasing water consumption.

CTOnews.com March 16, Tesla recently submitted to the German state of Brandenburg for the expansion of its Berlin Super Factory (Giga Berlin), which involves the renovation and expansion of the existing factory site. According to the plan, the Berlin superfactory will be able to produce cars at twice its current capacity.

A spokesman for the Brandenburg State Environmental Bureau (LfU) said that Tesla had applied to expand production capacity from the current 500000 vehicles per year to 1 million vehicles per year, which was confirmed by a spokesman for Tesla. However, it is worth noting that the Berlin super factory has not yet reached the production rate of 500000 vehicles a year.

Interestingly, Tesla said in the application, "through the complete treatment and recovery of wastewater generated in the production process, the planning and production process are optimized so that the previously agreed water consumption as the basis and contract is sufficient to meet this expansion." In other words, Tesla hinted that 1 million cars could be produced using the water used to produce 500000 cars.

CTOnews.com notes that the water consumption of the Berlin super factory has been a pain point for the company since the plant was built. Critics argue that the region lacks water resources, and that the Berlin superfactory threatens residents' water supplies. During an early visit to the Berlin superfactory site, Tesla CEO Elon Musk explained that the facility will do its best to reduce and optimize its water consumption. Musk also said Tesla will recycle as much water as possible.
