Google raised its YouTube TV subscription fee to $73 a month because of rising content costs
On Thursday, March 17, local time, Google announced an increase in the price of its YouTube TV TV subscription service. Starting in April, YouTube TV subscription fees will rise from $65 a month to $73 a month, according to an email sent by Google to subscribers that day.
YouTube TV provides users with live television and cable TV channel services transmitted over the Internet.
"with the rising cost of content and our insistence on improving service quality, we have updated the subscription price in order to continue to provide you with the best service," Google said in an email to subscribers. "
The move follows price increases for online streaming services owned by several competitors, including Disney, Apple and HBO.
In December, YouTube TV won the broadcasting rights to NFL's Sunday ticket package, allowing it to sell a series of NFL games that are not broadcast on local television to users across the country.
Several other companies, including Apple and Disney, are reported to be bidding for broadcasting rights. YouTube pays about $2 billion a year for this broadcasting right. Google has not yet announced the pricing of NFL's Sunday ticket package, which DirecTV sells at $80 a month.
Google also said in an email to subscribers that it would also cut the price of additional features that can view high-resolution 4K streaming content from $20 a month to $10 a month.
