Beijing, March 24 (Xinhua) Apple contractor Pegatron is in talks to open a second Indian factory, which will be responsible for assembling the latest iPhone models, according to people familiar with the matter. At present, Apple's manufacturing partners are continuing to diversify production.

▲ Mumbai's iPhone advertisement comes just six months after Pegatron invested $150 million (currently about 1.024 billion yuan) to open its first factory in India. Pegatron now plans to open a second plant near the southern city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu to assemble the latest iPhone, according to people familiar with the matter. Negotiations are under way to start a second factory by lease, which will be located in Mahindra World City near Chennai, near the company's first plant to open in September 2022. Pegatron's planned investment in plant expansion is unclear. However, the new plant will be smaller than the first, according to people familiar with the matter.

Pegatron now accounts for 10 per cent of Apple's iPhone production in India on an annual basis, according to Counterpoint, a research firm. India is seen as Apple's next growth market. From April 2022 to February this year, India exported about $9 billion worth of smartphones, of which iPhone accounted for more than 50 per cent, according to the Mobile phone and Electronics Association of India.

Pegatron declined to comment but said "any asset acquisition will be disclosed in accordance with the regulations". Apple has yet to comment.
