CTOnews.com Market research firm IDC said global PC shipments fell 29 percent in the first quarter of 2023 due to weak demand, excess inventory and deteriorating macroeconomic conditions, with Apple hit hardest.

Worldwide PC shipments were 56.9 million units in the first quarter of this year, down from 80.2 million units a year earlier, IDC said in a report released Sunday. This shipment continued the decline in the fourth quarter of 2022, when shipments fell 28.1% year-on-year.

Among the top five PC companies analyzed in the report, Apple's shipments fell 40.5% in the first quarter from the same period in 2022, the largest decline, Dell ranked second with a 31% decline, Lenovo, ASUS and HP also faced declining shipments.

Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple and ASUS are the top five PC manufacturers in terms of specific manufacturer rankings.

CTOnews.com notes that Apple said in February that sales of its Mac computers boomed during the wave of working from home during the epidemic, but in the most recent quarter, its sales fell 29% year-on-year to $7.7 billion.

Linn Huang, IDC's vice president of device and display research, said: "If the economy is on an upward trend by 2024, we expect the market to have a lot of upside as consumers seek updates, schools seek to replace worn-out Chromebooks, and businesses move to Windows 11." "
