CTOnews.com, April 25 (Xinhua)-- AI startup Runway has launched its first mobile app, which allows users to easily create various styles of AI videos on their phones. The app currently only supports iOS, and users can download it for free on App Store, but there is only a certain amount of free quota each month.

Runway's mobile app uses its Gen-1 model, a video-to-video (video-to-video) generation AI model. Users can upload a video, then select a text, picture or video as input, and let the Gen-1 model change the style of the video according to the input. For example, users can upload a video of a bike riding in a park and select a watercolor painting as input to turn the video into a watercolor style. Alternatively, the user can upload a movie clip and select a picture of the cat as input to turn the character in the video into a cat. CTOnews.com found that this is a bit like a filter, but unlike a filter, it generates a whole new video as output.

Of course, the output of this generative AI is not perfect. Sometimes, the objects in the video will deform, change color, and blur, but this is also the fun of generating AI. Users can try a variety of different inputs to see what happens. CEO Crist ó bal Valenzuela of Runway says it's important to make these tools available on your phone, "because you can directly use your phone to record a video and then tell the Gen-1 model how to convert that video."

At present, there are some restrictions on Runway's mobile app. For example, users cannot upload videos for more than five seconds, nor can they use prohibited inputs. For example, users cannot generate nude, copyrighted works or sensitive content. Each video takes about two to three minutes to generate, which may be shortened as technology advances. Moreover, only Gen-1 models are currently available, but Valenzuela says more advanced Gen-2 models will be added soon.

This tool for generating AI is not mature enough, but it shows unlimited possibilities. Like the "optical toys" of the 19th century, although they have limited functions, they are the ancestors of modern photography machines. Runway's mobile app is like such a toy that users may not be able to use it for professional production, but I can't imagine how much impact it will have in the future.
