Beijing time on the morning of May 17, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (Satya Nadella) said in an interview that some people claim that OpenAI is controlled by Microsoft, which is actually not true.

In April, Tesla, Elon Musk, the head of Twitter and SpaceX, said publicly that if Microsoft did not have direct control of OpenAI, it should also have a strong say. Musk is critical of AI's development. He has issued an open letter with more than 270000 people asking AI Labs to suspend AI research and development.

"I have respect for Musk and what he has done, but what he said is actually not true," Nadella said. "OpenAI's mission is controlled by a non-profit board. We have a non-controlling stake and we have good business cooperation in it."

OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a non-profit organization. When OpenAI changed its structure in 2019, OpenAI executives made it clear that the company would become a "profit-limiting" entity called OpenAI LP. At present, OpenAI limits the first batch of investors to earn no more than 100 times the amount of their initial investment, and the return for newcomers such as Microsoft is even lower.

Microsoft invested in OpenAI again in January, the third phase of the partnership. In recent months, Microsoft has begun to embed GPT-4 into its own products and services.

Nadella believes that AI research and development is advancing rapidly and that Microsoft should make good use of the new technology. He also believes that AI is rapidly evolving in the right direction and that humans are involved, which is a design choice.
