CTOnews.com, May 17, according to South Korean media The Elec, Samsung SDI is stepping up its research and development of electric vehicle batteries to develop solid-state batteries using sulphide electrolytes. Samsung is planning to apply the solid-state battery to mobile devices such as smartphones, the report said.

Solid-state batteries have many advantages over mainstream lithium batteries, including being able to store more energy than traditional lithium-ion batteries and not catching fire when pierced, which means that solid-state batteries are safer than existing mainstream lithium batteries.

Samsung is not the only original equipment manufacturer interested in developing solid-state batteries. Earlier this year, Xiaomi also said it had developed a working prototype of a smartphone powered by solid-state batteries.

CTOnews.com previously reported that Samsung plans to apply lamination technology used in automotive batteries to Galaxy S24 phones, a design that not only improves safety, but also increases battery capacity by 10 per cent at the same weight / volume.
