Coming into effect in July next year, the Governor of Minnesota signed a maintenance bill covering iPhone and other electronic devices.
CTOnews.com, May 25 (Xinhua) Governor Tim Walz signed the Digital Fair maintenance Act (Digital Fair Repair Act) today after it passed a vote in both houses of the Minnesota legislature in April.
The bill, which will enter into force on July 1, 2024, applies to most consumer products produced after July 1, 2021, as listed below in the attached CTOnews.com:
Video game console
Agricultural equipment
Medical equipment
Engine vehicle
Network security tools.
The bill covers smartphones, tablets, televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, smart home devices, smartwatches, electronic toys, blenders and even smart sneakers.
The legislation, known as the Digital Fair maintenance Act (Digital Fair Repair Act), which covers all consumer electronics, will require companies to sell maintenance parts and tools and provide maintenance documents to consumers on "fair and reasonable terms".
The Act entitles consumers and independent maintainers to receive manuals, charts, diagnostics and parts from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in order to repair their own equipment.
