CTOnews.com, May 25, according to Bloomberg, Sony said it would buy about 27 hectares (270000 square meters) of land in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, for its chip business, while local media in Kumamoto Prefecture reported that Sony would build its second manufacturing plant in Kumamoto, possibly investing hundreds of billions of yen.

It is reported that this plan aims to accelerate the development of Sony's chip business and meet the growing demand for Sony Semiconductor in the global market. CTOnews.com also reported in December that Sony had considered building a new factory in Kumamoto prefecture to produce smartphone image sensors and planned to break ground as soon as 2024 and start production as early as 2025.

It is understood that Sony semiconductor solutions topped the list with a 44 per cent share of revenue, followed by Samsung systems LSI and OMNIVISION. Sony, Samsung and OMNIVISION account for nearly 83 per cent of the global smartphone image sensor market. CTOnews.com noted that Shimizu Shimizu, president of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Sony Semiconductor subsidiary, told the media that TSMC's Kumamoto factory in Kumamoto had "increased confidence" in expanding its procurement channels, so Sony's acquisition of Kumamoto Land in Japan could also be seen as a way to improve its own capacity reserve space.
