CTOnews.com, June 1 (Xinhua)-- according to IDC's latest forecast, the weak economic outlook and persistent inflation will reduce global smartphone shipments by 3.2% to 1.17 billion units in 2023. The forecast is worse than the 1.1 per cent decline the agency forecast in February.

However, although the forecast for 2023 was lowered, the IDC report said the smartphone market was expected to recover in 2024 and achieve positive growth of 6 per cent. But the report also points out that the recovery in consumer demand in all regions is still slower than expected.

If 2022 is a year of excess inventory, then 2023 is a year of caution, said Nabila Popal, director of research at ▲ Touyuan IDCIDC, who tracks mobile device consumption. While every manufacturer wants to prepare inventory for the inevitable recovery, no one wants to restock for too long, which means taking the risk of inventory overstocking.

At the same time, Ryan Reith, vice president of IDC Group, said that the new folding screen device will be a positive step forward for the industry, but unfortunately, it hits the current period of weak shipments.

In addition, it is reported that Samsung has set a target of 15 million folding screen phones this year, 60 per cent higher than last year.

According to IDC, after next year's recovery, global smartphone shipments will continue to rise in 2025-2027, reaching nearly 1.4 billion units by 2027.
