Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, June 3 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft is expected to pay a fine of $425 million (CTOnews.com Note: about 3.013 billion yuan) for LinkedIn LinkedIn's alleged invasion of privacy, Reuters reported.
The Irish data Protection Board (IDPC) is currently investigating LinkedIn's actions in 2018, focusing on whether LinkedIn's targeted ads violated European data protection laws.
Since the order was not made public, no details of the charges were mentioned in the report. Targeted advertising is currently one of the focuses of the European Union because it relies heavily on people's data. Protecting personal data and disclosing how it is used is a key element of the General data Protection regulations (GDPR) privacy law.
Earlier this year, Facebook was fined 1.2 billion euros (currently about 9.132 billion yuan) by IDPC. The penalty is for violations of the EU's GDPR privacy law. The amount of fines within the EU may be quite large, as violators can be fined up to 4 per cent of the global annual turnover in the previous year.
IDPC didn't respond to a Reuters request for comment, while Microsoft issued the following statement, translated as follows by CTOnews.com:
"after review and analysis, the company will increase its existing reserves for this matter and withdraw approximately $425 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 based on the current exchange rate."
Microsoft was informed of the preliminary decision in April and plans to challenge the fine after IDPC issued a final ticket, Reuters reported.
