New Mac Pro with 7 PCIe slots: does not support unique display, scalable storage
CTOnews.com June 6, Apple announced the launch of a new Mac Pro with M2 Ultra chip at the WWDC 2023 developer conference held in the early hours of this morning, fulfilling the promise of a complete transition to Apple Silicon.
The new Mac Pro is equipped with a strong M2 Ultra chip, but the lack of support for PCI-E graphics cards such as Radeon will have an impact on most professional users.
The new Mac Pro comes with seven PCI-E expansion slots, but does not support graphics cards such as Radeon Pro.
The design of the new computer is the same as that of the Intel Mac Pro launched in 2019, with eight lightning ports and six PCIe slots that can be expanded to support up to six Pro Display XDR.
The Mac Pro with M2 Ultra has 24-core CPU, up to 76 cores of GPU and 192GB memory. Apple says the new Mac Pro is three times faster than the fastest Intel-based Mac Pro.
It should be noted, however, that the new Mac Pro is equipped with a Gen 4 PCI-E slot and is not compatible with the expansion of any graphics card.
If users want more powerful graphics rendering capabilities, they may need to choose other workstation models.
CTOnews.com Note: Mac Pro's PCIe slot is only suitable for I / O expansion cards such as digital signal processing (DSP) or serial digital interface (SDI), as well as additional cards for extended storage and network, which makes the Mac Pro Apple's first and only Apple Silicon device that can expand storage through the PCIe.
