CTOnews.com, June 9, Toyota announced yesterday that it will spend nearly $50 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 356 million yuan) to set up a special research and development laboratory for electric vehicle batteries at its North American R & D headquarters in Michigan, which is expected to start operating in 2025.

Previously, Toyota's North American R & D headquarters was mainly used to study traditional fuel engines. The establishment of the new laboratory will enhance Toyota's research and development capabilities in electric vehicles in North America, which Toyota North America calls "an important shift towards electrification."

CTOnews.com previously reported that Toyota announced earlier this month that it would renovate its plant in Kentucky and start producing a new electric SUV from 2025. In North Carolina, the company is building a lithium battery plant to meet the production needs of electric vehicles in North America.

In addition, Toyota yesterday announced plans to produce hybrid pick-up trucks at its factories in Mexico, a sign that Toyota is further accelerating its electrification in North America and the global market.
