CTOnews.com, June 14 (Xinhua) after the European Union (EU) banned Huawei from its 5G infrastructure project because of security concerns, the Financial Times said the European Union was turning heavily to the Chinese company for help in laying out next-generation communications technology.

Huawei is reportedly participating in Horizon Europe, the EU's flagship research and innovation program, with 11 projects, including artificial intelligence, 6G, cloud computing, quantum sensing, connectivity and autopilot framework technologies.

According to the Financial Times, Huawei has received about 4 million euros (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 30.92 million yuan), accounting for about 14%. All of these projects are highly sensitive, and this participation has attracted a lot of attention given that Huawei has been banned because of security concerns.

John Strand, founder of Strand Consult, a Danish consultancy at Tuyuan Pexels, said that involving Huawei was "like inviting people you don't trust to visit your secret office. This could pose a risk to European security and EU autonomy plans".

Jay Gronin-Law, director of technology and innovation at the Mercator China Research Centre in Germany, said it was "incredible" to include Huawei in the project, adding that it did not trigger any red lines throughout the process.

For Huawei, this international cooperation is "vital". The company said its participation in the Horizon Europe was "independently assessed by different panels of experts selected by the EU".
