CTOnews.com, June 21 (Xinhua)-- Gannett, the largest US newspaper group with more than 200 daily newspapers, has filed a lawsuit in US federal court against Google and Alphabet, accusing them of using tools and services to monopolize the online advertising market.

Gannett filed a lawsuit in Manhattan on Tuesday, accusing Google of making a lot of money from advertising sharing, anti-competitive behavior and hurting the online publishing industry.

"Google has been implementing a complex, anti-competitive and deceptive plan for more than a decade," Gannett said in the lawsuit.

Mike Reed, chief executive of Gannett, points out that the online advertising industry has boomed in recent years, with the size of the industry exceeding $200 billion (CTOnews.com Note: about 1.43 trillion yuan currently), eight times what it was in 2009. But publishers' advertising revenues have "fallen sharply" as a result of Google's monopolistic behavior.

Mr Reid said Google, as a middleman, monopolized the market for important software and technology products used by publishers and advertisers to buy and sell advertising space, controlling 90 per cent of the "publisher advertising server" market and 60 per cent of the "advertising trading platform" market.

Reid said Google generated more than $30 billion in advertising space sales in 2022 (currently about 214.8 billion yuan), six times the digital advertising revenue of all US news publications combined.
