Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, June 28 (Xinhua)-- Apple has publicly opposed the online Security Act (Online Safety Bill), a British content regulation bill being considered by the British Parliament, according to BBC. The bill aims to make it mandatory for messaging services, including Apple's iMessage, to scan messages for child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). Apple believes that any move to weaken end-to-end encryption will expose all users to security risks.
Encryption is "a key ability to protect the privacy of journalists, human rights activists and diplomats," Apple said in a statement. The company urged the British government to amend the bill to protect strong end-to-end encryption for the benefit of all. Apple also said encryption also helps ordinary citizens protect themselves from surveillance, identity theft, fraud and data breaches. The online Security Act poses a serious threat to this protection and may expose British citizens to greater risks.
According to BBC, a series of amendments are expected to be released soon, which are expected to address the requirement to scan messages for whether they contain CSAM.
CTOnews.com noted that Apple had tried to launch its own CSAM testing system for iCloud photos, but failed. However, Apple continues to introduce new features in the area of communications security in iMessage that can blur potentially inappropriate images and provide resources to prevent sensitive content from being shared. In iOS 17, Apple extends communications security to "AirDrop, system-level photo selectors, FaceTime messages, contact posters in phone apps, and third-party apps."
