Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens for the delivery of clues on the way! CTOnews.com, July 3 (Xinhua)-- the world's most powerful space telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), has made its first observation of Saturn, taking stunning high-definition pictures showing Saturn's iconic ring structure, according to NASA's latest blog.
Launched on December 25, 2021, JWST is a near-infrared telescope capable of detecting the farthest and darkest objects in the universe. On June 25 this year, astronomers used JWST's powerful instruments to aim it at Saturn, one of the most iconic planets in the solar system. This is the first time that JWST has used a near-infrared instrument to observe Saturn, and the converted images show amazing results.
NASA explained on his blog that Saturn appears dark in the image because the rich methane gas in its atmosphere absorbs almost all the sunlight that falls on it. However, Saturn's iconic ring structure is not affected. JWST images show that they are very bright, reveal the details of the rings, and even see Saturn's dimmer rings (CTOnews.com Note: not seen in this image released by NASA).
"this new image of Saturn clearly shows the details of the interior of the ring system, as well as several of Saturn's moons-Dione, Enceladus and Tyses," NASA wrote. Other deeper exposures (not shown here) will allow the team to detect dimmer rings of the planets, which are not seen in this image, including tiny G rings and scattered E rings. Saturn's rings are made up of rocks and ice, and these particles range in size from less than a grain of sand to some as big as peaks on Earth. "
